- BDSM — Bondage, Discipline, Sadism, Masochism
- S/m — Sadism and masochism, or Sado-masochism
- D/s — Dominance and submission
- Lifestyle D/s — living full-time with a partner within the power structure of a D/s relationship
- age play — Daddy and his little girl, or other adult/child fantasy variants acted out between adults
- vanilla — conventional, not kinky or perverted, not devoted to the exploration of the unconventional
- Dom — or Dominant, the male dominant partner in a D/s situation, female variant is Domme
- sub — or submissive, the female or male submissive partner in a D/s situation
- Master — the male dominant partner in a D/s situation, female variant is Mistress
- slave — the submissive partner in a D/s situation
- Top — the aggressor or active partner in an S/m situation, also used as a verb
- bottom — the passive partner in an S/m situation, also used as a verb
- switch — someone who enjoys being in either position in a D/s or S/m situation
- Sadist — someone who enjoys treating others with extreme aggression, including giving pain
- masochist — someone who enjoys being treated with extreme aggression
- painslut — a masochist who enjoys receiving pain, possibly to the point of orgasm
- consent — giving someone the right to do something to you
- limit — something that someone will not do or accept being done to them
- soft limit — a limit that under certain conditions may no longer be a limit
- hard limit — a limit that remains in place under all conditions
- safeword — a word used by the sub or bottom to halt the actions of the Dom or Top
